Setting up Siri Shortcuts

Tips and tricks on using voice commands with ETA

It's been a month since iOS 12 landed, which in turn ushered the Siri release of ETA into the wild. Since launch, we've received some phenomenal feedback.

Thanks to all the users that have both shared how Siri + ETA are working for them but also given us great feedback on how to improve the overall experience. Coupled with that we've been honoured with features both in the press and on the App Store.

To help those that have yet to witness the wonders of Siri + ETA integration we've put together a handy little guide that steps out how to set it up.

Each Siri Shortcut is based on your usage within the app. This means that once you do something in ETA you'll be then able to create a Siri Shortcut based off that action.

At the moment ETA supports three types of Siri Shortcuts:

  1. Add your current location
  2. Get directions to a location (using any navigation app)
  3. Get an ETA to a location

1. Add your current location

  • By simply launching ETA you'll be able to create a Shortcut to Add your current location. Found a great cafe, just parked your car, or just want to save something quickly? Simply command Siri to save your current location.
  • To create a Siri shortcut for add location head to Settings app > Siri & Search and you'll see "Save current location" appear in the "Suggested Shortcuts" list.
  • Tap the + button next to it to add it to Siri (and choose whatever phrase you want)
  • You're all done! Now whenever you activate Siri and speak that phrase, your current location will be added to ETA. Nice one!

2. Get directions to a location

  • Firstly, choose your favourite directions app in ETA app > settings (option found at the top right of the main dashboard). Choose Google, Waze, Apple Maps or more (whichever is your favourite)
  • Now head back to the dashboard and find the location you wish to create a shortcut, tap on it to head to the detail view
  • On this screen tap the directions button in the bottom left. A shortcut has been created.
  • Now head to Settings app > Siri & Search and you'll see an option for "Directions to " appear in the 'Suggested Shortcuts' list.
  • Tap the + button next to it to add it to Siri (and choose whatever phrase you want)
  • You're all done! Now whenever you activate Siri and speak that phrase, directions to your location will be initiated!

3. Get an ETA to a location

  • Need to quickly check travel time to a favourite location? With a simply Siri command, travel duration and traffic summary can be provided in a flash!
  • Ok, to setup head to your ETA dashboard and select the location you wish to create a shortcut to display an ETA. Tap on it to head to the detail view.
  • Now head to Settings > Siri & Search and you'll see an option for "Estimated travel time to " appear in the 'Suggested Shortcuts' list.
  • Tap the + button next to it to add it to Siri (and choose whatever phrase you want)
  • You're all done! Now whenever you activate Siri and speak that phrase, the ETA and traffic conditions for that journey will be provided. Super Handy!

What's next

We're busy working on improvements to our Siri Shortcut support. Soon you'll be able to share your ETA with Siri and build workflows in the Shortcuts app with the locations you have stored in ETA.

But first. We've got a great update to our watch app providing awesome Infograph complications for the new Apple Watch Series 4!
